Data Lifecycle Model
The repurposing and subsequent secondary analyses of research data are rare activities in many fields as a result of poor to non-existent data archiving practices. Our project aims to overcome such a shortfall in the field of Knowledge Transfer by integrating a data life-cycle model into the operation of the project itself. A particular strength of the data life cycle model is the insight it offers for the creation of rich metadata at every stage of the research project’s life. Traditionally, metadata have only been created for the outputs of research (i.e., publications). Other stages of the research project (points 1 to 4 and 8 to 9 of the model) produce their own outputs, such as bibliographies, questionnaires, and data analysis syntax code. By creating rich metadata for each stage of the data life cycle, we will provide a fuller record of the project’s life, which secondary researchers will be able to discover and repurpose in their own investigations.
